I worked as a self-employed Computer Consultant and while on a business trip to the USA in 2006 I saw some beautiful carved ducks. When I was back in the UK I wondered if I could make anything like that and found a course with Judith Nicoll where I carved and painted an Antique style Mallard Duck – and I was hooked!

I joined the BDWCA and went to my first annual show, which was held at WWT Slimbridge that year. While at the show I met committee member Keith Royle, who was very quick to discover that I had computer skills, and by the end of that meeting he had persuaded me to take on the job of Editor of Wingspan. I said I would give it a try but I was very busy so wasn’t sure I could fit it in! My first issue was Spring 2007 and guess what, I’m still producing it!

I have made many friends in the Bird Carving community throughout the world, especially in the USA and Canada, and have attended – and helped at – quite a few carving shows, including the Ward World Carving Championships in Ocean City, Maryland, USA, where in 2025 I have the honour of being asked to Judge.
